Nerine Cavadias
Interdisciplinary Artist

Nerine Cavadias is a neurodivergent interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto, Ontario. Her art practice largely revolves around the past, with specific interest in social commentary, and lived or un-lived experience. Nerine’s art focuses on photographic translation through a variety of processes, stemming from the lack of a “minds-eye”; a condition called Aphantasia which affects only 1-3% of people.
What I'm working on
Nerine is currently developing a body of work to be displayed at the Art Gallery of Northumberland.
She acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts in this project.

Uninherited Memory
Uninherited Memory revisits images; places, people, and moments, from my family’s past. The photos were taken before I was born, leaving me with little context or sentimentality. I often do not know the people or places I am depicting. This position interested me as an artist, almost assuming the level of familiarity as the viewer when they first encounter my work. My approach to painting through this series has undergone a divergent evolution. The first paintings were produced with a commitment to photorealism. As time progressed, the fidelity towards photorealism faded and an appreciation for my painterly process took priority. This show encapsulates an artistic journey I undertook while exploring photos with nothing but a distant connection.

'Square One'
Nerine's drawings explore the connection between art, inheritance, and mental health. Through drawing Nerine channels her energy, exploring the ways that art can be used as a tool for healing and self-discovery.
